Dilute, Dilute, Dilute!

Dilute, Dilute, Dilute!

In real estate, location, location, location is key. When using essential oils, dilute, dilute, dilute is key. In fact, it is crucial to your safety and the success of the blend you are using.

Essential oils pack an amazing amount of power in just one little drop. To harness the power of aromatherapy benefits and still stay safe, it is important to follow dilution guidelines.

There are many reasons to dilute your essential oils.

Safety first

Safety in aromatherapy should always be the first consideration. When essential oils are applied ‘neat’ (applying straight essential oil directly to your skin without adding it to a carrier oil first) it can have adverse reactions, cause skin irritation or sensitization, even building up to toxicity. While some oils may be able to successfully be used alone, over time skin sensitivity could appear and it is best to err on the side of caution and dilute all essential oils with an appropriate carrier oil, if they are going to be applied topically.

Synergy

Safe dilution of an essential oil into a quality carrier oil has the added benefit of the health properties inherent within the carrier oil. When combined, benefits from both the essential oil and the carrier oil work together for an enhanced level of care that each on their own would not necessarily provide. Think of it as intentional layering to meet a specific need.

Frequency & Coverage of Use

Using essential oils without the benefit of a carrier oil means the oil does not stretch very far over a body area to be covered and it also limits how often if can be used. Use less essential oil, in a carrier oil as it will cover more body surface, safely and allow you to use it more frequently, and still stay within acceptable dermal limits.

Hot Oils

Essential oils such as Cinnamon Bark, Clove, Oregano and Thyme are considered ‘hot’ oils meaning they are more likely to cause skin irritation than other essential oils due to higher levels of aldehydes and/or phenols. Hot oils should be diluted even more than other essential oils to avoid adverse skin reactions.

Sustainability of Essential Oils

Some essential oils are on the endangered or vulnerable list and should be used judiciously, if at all. Sometimes substituting a more accessible essential oil can offer the same benefit as an at-risk oil. Sustaining the resource is critical to maintaining the ability for future generations to practice aromatherapy helping their clients receive all the healthful benefits.

Cost Saving

Even if all the above reasons were inconsequential, and they aren’t, cost alone would be enough of a reason to dilute. Many essential oils are expensive and using less essential oil, costs less but still provides all the benefits.

Maximize the benefit of aromatherapy. Always follow dilution guidelines to ensure you are receiving all the available benefits of an essential oil blend without the risk.
