Carrier Oils: Power Packed Transporters

Carrier Oils: Power Packed Transporters

In the world of aromatherapy, the term ‘carrier oil’ is used frequently. Sometimes referred to as ‘base oil’, the use of carrier oils is an important component of healthy skin care. Used alone or combined with essential oils, extracts, butters and more, carrier oils are powerhouses of support for your skin.

What are carrier oils? Where do they come from and how do we use them?

Carrier oils are the oils from seeds, kernels or nuts of a plant. Cold pressed, to avoid destroying beneficial properties by subjecting it to heat, oils ‘carry’ their goodness, and the goodness of any additives, to your skin through topical application When essential oils are added to carrier oils, the carrier oil dilutes the essential oil ensuring its safe transportation.

A few of the more easily accessible, and commonly known oils might be Olive oil, Sunflower, Coconut, Jojoba, Safflower or Sesame Seed oil.

Let’s take a quick look at each…

Olive Oil, rich in proteins, fatty acids, vitamins and minerals, is an antioxidant and useful for damaged or dry skin, scars and rheumatic conditions. Avoid if you have oily skin.

Sunflower Oil, non-greasy and suitable for all skin types it is a good multipurpose skin care oil. Works well on infant’s skin irritations, retaining moisture and softening skin. Absorbs best when blended with another carrier oil.

Coconut Oil, suitable for most skin types, may help reduce wrinkles and improve skin elasticity. Often used during pregnancy on stretch marks and serves as a great moisturizer on dry, scaly skin. Blends well into a creamy texture for body butters and lip balms. Could cause irritation if you have sensitive skin.

Jojoba Oil is an excellent moisturizer, mimicking the natural sebum of our skin. Its ability to withstand high heat means it can be used in candle making and other wax products. Helpful for diaper rash, eczema and psoriasis, it is soothing to the skin. Jojoba is a liquid wax.

Safflower Oil, a rich source of Vitamin E, acting as a natural antioxidant. Absorbs quickly into skin without clogging pores and supports cell regeneration. Great for dry skin and skin conditions. Oil should be refrigerated when not in use to remain stable.

Sesame Seed Oil, suitable for all skin types, it is a great choice for baby skin care such as diaper rash and massage. Excellent for after sun care and shown to protect skin from chlorine damage. Unrefined sesame seed oil has a strong odor that makes it less suitable for blends where aromatic benefits are important.

There are many more carrier oils than these few. Look into the therapeutic properties of oils such as Sweet Almond Oil (avoid if you have a nut allergy), Grapeseed Oil, Rosehip Seed Oil, Tamanu Oil or Rice Bran Oil. The list of oils for use is long and varied.

Along with use as a transporter of essential oils to your skin, carrier oils, on their own, offer properties helpful to skin without added unknown or potentially harmful ingredients. Sometimes a carrier oil is all you need to improve the health of your skin.
